以当下全球疫情发展态势看，病毒或将与人类较长时间共存。但是，与病毒共存绝不是放任病毒不管，不能像一些国家那样单纯寄希望于疫苗，防控措施却形同虚设，而应该坚持广泛接种疫苗和疫情防控并行，戴口罩、勤洗手、保持距离、减少聚集、隔离等措施放松不得。尤其是在全球疫情没出现实质性转变的时候，绝不能以“与病毒共存”的借口放松疫情防控，以免波及已有的防疫成果。
如果放任疫情恶化，不仅会给全球公共卫生体系造成巨大压力直至崩溃，同时也可能产生新的风险与不可知的毒株，进而使本来就不稳定的世界经济复苏进程偏离既有轨道。IMF首席经济学家吉塔·戈皮纳特不久前警告，变异新冠病毒持续传播可能令世界经济复苏“脱轨”，或将导致全球经济产出到2025年累计损失约4.5万亿美元。
